Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics

 

One of the four departments in the faculty, clinical nutrition department, beside teaching duties is designed to lead the research in clinical settings. The research is being done in this department is varied, based on the student’s theses and dissertations or faculties interests, including: gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine diseases, cancers, weight management, etc. A variety of studies have been done on diabetes. Animal experimentations have also been carried out. The assessment of nutritional status of different population has been another area of interest.

 

The Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics of the SBMU School of Nutrition has been the first of its kind at the national level. The Department was formed originally in 1977 under the title then called “the Department of Human Nutrition”, and in 2000 it was renamed to its present title. The academic staff members of the Department are specialists in nutrition and dietetics. They train students at various educational levels, and also conduct researches in nutrition and dietetics; moreover, they render their services to the patients at the Clinic of “Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics” located at the SBMU School of Nutrition.   

Vision:

The Department is seeking to transform into the most valid Center of Excellence in Iran in clinical nutrition and dietetics for the training of outstanding specialists, as well as performing applied and basic researches in clinical nutrition and dietetics. It also tries to establish a specialized dietetics system at SBMU affiliated hospitals.  

Mission:

As its mission, the Department pursues to train the students at various levels of nutrition sciences, especially in clinical nutrition and dietetics so the students possess the adequate theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in their field of study. 

Goals:

The goals of the Department include:

  1. Admitting students in clinical nutrition and dietetics at graduate levels (MSC & PhD);
  2. Establishing training program periods in Registered Dietitian (RD); 
  3. Establishing specialized dietetics systems in SBMU affiliated hospitals so that each hospital ward would include at least a specialized dietetics system for itself;
  4. Establishing specialty retraining program periods in clinical nutrition and dietetics for those graduated in nutrition;
  5. Performing applied and basic researches in the specialized fields of clinical nutrition and dietetics;
  6. Conducting research for identifying dietetics system problems in the clinics and hospitals and solving the existing problems;
  7. Collaborating with national and international scientific centers and conducting joint projects with them;
  8. Promoting the academic level and upgrading the applied knowledge level of the academic staff members 

Activities:

Presently, there are three areas of activities at the department as follows;

A-Educational Activities:

  1. Theoretical teaching to PhD, MSC, and BSC students of nutrition, especially in courses related to clinical nutrition and dietetics;
  2. Practical teaching to PhD, MSC, and BSC students of nutrition in related courses of nutrition and dietetics in hospital wards (such as surgery, cardiovascular, endocrinology, digestive system and liver, nephrology and dialysis, pediatrics, and oncology wards); practical training in dietetics in an outpatient format, as well as familiarizing the students with food management in hospitals; 
  3. Educational collaboration in specialized re-training program periods for those graduated in clinical nutrition and dietetics; 

B- Research Activities:

The research activities (such as independent research projects, or student research proposals) in specialized fields as follows:

  1. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in obesity;
  2. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors (such as high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, etc.);
  3. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in digestive system and liver diseases;
  4. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in nephrology diseases;
  5. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in endocrine diseases;
  6. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in child diseases, especially hereditary metabolic disorders;
  7. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in neurology diseases;
  8. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in cancers;
  9. Clinical nutrition & dietetics in tube feeding & parenteral nutrition in metabolic stresses (such as surgery, burns, infections, etc.) 

C- Activities in Rendering Dietetics Services:

The academic staff members have been rendering dietetics services to the public one day per week at the SBMU School of Nutrition. Moreover, clinical nutrition consultations and dietetics services to the patients and specialists are rendered at the SBMU affiliated hospital one day per week.
